HMCS Gatineau, Destroyer Escort - Cruise from Halifax, NS via Bermuda, Panama,
Manzanillo, Acapulco, San Diego to Esquimalt (near Victoria, BC). This was in
the summer of 1969 and I was an 18 year old Ordinary Seaman. We took her to
Esquimalt for ASROC conversion. Captain Hughes (later Rear-Admiral) was the
skipper. We saw the Navy hydrofoil HMCS Bras D'Or fly into the harbour in
Halifax and in Bermuda, I sat on the stern and looked up at the moon as I
listened to the live broadcast on my transistor radio of the first man to walk
on the moon (A few years later I got to meet Colonel Neil Armstrong). Summer of
1969.
