CANADIAN FERRETS IN UNITED NATIONS EMERGENCY FORCE (UNEF).
Special thanks to L/Cpl Kevin Langille, the Archives of the Royal
Canadian Dragoons at CFB Petawawa, Ontario.
The UNEF operated between the Egyptians and the Israelis as a buffer in
the Sinai Desert in the late 1956-1967.
United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF)delivered to Egypt.
These Ferrets were apparently withdrawn from Militia units which had been
tasked with reconnaissance duties. The 56th Canadian Reconnaissance
Squadron (so named as it was formed in 1956) consisted of Royal Canadian
Dragoon and Lord Strathcona Horse (Royal Canadians). It was
commanded by Major R. B. Tackaberry [I would like to talk with
this officer is anyone knows him. Colin Stevens seaforth72 (at)

FERRETS WITH UNEF NUMBER KNOWN BUT CAR NUMBERS NOT KNOWN

- UNEF 1226 (RCD Archives)
- UNEF 1228
- UNEF 1229
- UNEF 1597
- UNEF 1598
Looking at the numbers, and deducing that most of them were issued in a
block between 1201 and 1229. The 1598 are not part of that series
and so they were possibly shipped to Egypt as replacement vehicles.
54-82524 MAY be a UNEF one as the owner (2007 in New Mexico) found white
paint in various areas under the later green.
This list was composed from photographic information. Any additional
info or corrections would be appreciated. Colin Stevens seaforth72 (at)

Vehicles of the Canadian contingent of the UNEF are loaded on
railway flat cars for the trip to Rafah where the new maintenance area has
been set up. (The vehicles in front of the two M43CDN ambulances appear to
be Ferrets.)

armoured scout cars before driving them from Port Said. (CAR numbers
illegible in magazine photo)

Crossing 200 miles of the Sinai Desert, through the Mitla Pass, the

1957 - The 56th Reconnaissance Squadron's armoured cars enroute from Port
Said to take up their operational role southwest of the Gaza Strip. No
apparent UNEF number on Ferret.
|
|
1957 - The squadron takes "a break" in the Mitla Pass to let their motors
cool off. This is the pass where the Egyptian and Israeli armies had one
of their fiercest encounters.
|
|
1957 - NCOs check their position on a map during the desert crossing when
the temperature went well over 100 degrees. (Ferret's UNEF number on front
appears to be UNEF 1213.)

Ferret (CAR is indistinct but MAY be 54-82527 ?) in factory green paint
with two white vertical bars (for UNEF presumably). Also an M38 jeep.
This appears to be a US made Willys M38 jeep, not a Canadian M38CDN as
there is a US Army registration number showing. The jeep has markings
(in white presumably) under the door well which appear to read:
UNEF 1231 (?)
20997074 (?)
There is also the UNEF two white bar marking on the sides of the
hood.

Ferret 54-82518 UNEF 1222 in Canadian Army United Nations Peacekeeping service in
July 1957 near El Quasima. The vehicle was United Nations Emergency
Force (UNEF) vehicle 1222. This Ferret was serving with No. 56 Canadian
Reconnaissance Squadron and is being inspected by Major-General Burns
(Centre). This Ferret was sold surplus out of Calgary in April 1981 and
probably went to a US buyer, possibly through a Chicago dealer. United Nations Photo.

Canadian Ferret in UN service with UNEF, vehicle number UNEF 1210. Blown
up by a mine. Being examined by the RCEME (Royal Canadian Electrical
& Mechanical Engineers) workshop of UNEF at Camp Rafah. April 1959.
UN 62415. Original photo was water damaged, torn and ink label for
adjoining photo got on this one. Photo has been roughly retouched by me
due to the damage. Wouldn't it be interesting to know the CAR/CFR of this
vehicle and I wonder who owns it now!

| Ferret Mk. I CAR 54-82527 UNEF 1223 of 56th Canadian
Reconnaissance Squadron in the Sinai Desert. This vehicle has been
modified to carry extra water cans in a rack on the rear of the engine
compartment. It carries a crew of three. Note that it is armed with a Bren
Gun. Radio antennae and date indicate that it likely has a No. 19 Wireless
Set. Published in Canadian Army Journal July 1958 (Vol. XII No. 3) p. 33 |
