Dutch EUROPA off Nanaimo Harbour in 2002.  Photographed by Colin Stevens from a BC Ferry.

Looking West. On right: Dark vessel is replica Nina (Christopher Columbus, 1492) and to our right of it, Star of Herschell Island (correct name?). In distance are two square riggers. On right is Dutch Europa. On left is US Hawaiian Chieftan.

Looking South-East. Modern ship is HMCS Yellowknife. Moored behind her is the Maple Leaf.  Vessel nearest camera on right is a US one.

Foremast of the NINA replica showing the flag which had the cross and initials for King Ferdinand (F) and Queen Isabella (Y) as I recall.
Dutch ship EUROPE docked. She was the one farthest West of the vessels on display.

My son Neil and I volunteered for two days (Thurs-Fri) and worked on traffic control.

It was interesting and there were problems, mainly due to the overwhelming crowds. They MAY host such an event again in 2005.

Suggestions to organizers of such events:

DON'T HAVE PEOPLE LINE UP TO GET WRIST-BANDS!!!!!!!!

There were three TYPES of LINE-UPS!

  1. To buy tickets if one did not have one already. Volunteers were given a ticket, but still had to line up to exchange it for a wrist band! The volunteers should have received a wrist-band when they registered!!!!!!
  2. To exchange said ticket for a wrist-band so as to be able to go on board the vessels.
  3. Line-ups for each dock area to go on board ships - and there were at least three such line-up areas.

SUGGESTIONS FOR VISITORS TO SUCH EVENTS:

  1. Come early - before 10:00 am if possible..
  2. Know which ship(s) you want to see as some people only got on one (1)!
  3. Bring water (ESPECIALLY for seniors and children!)
  4. Wear a hat and sun screen.
  5. Best view was from boats that plied the waters for $15 a head usually - one did not get on board but did get to see the vessels, and probably had good photo opportunities.

NOTE: IT WAS ANNOUNCED BY RICHMOND CITY COUNCIL THAT THIS EVENT WOULD NOT BE HELD AGAIN DUE TO THE COST.
