Many people wish to find out more about those who served and sometimes died, in military service. For genealogists, this information is terrific but they need to remember that people often lied about their age to get into the military. 15 year old boys tried to pass themselves off as

Here are a few web sites that can help.

World War I Canadian Army Records

When soldiers joined the Canadian Army in World War I, they each signed an attestation document. many of these have now been scanned and are available on the Internet for free.

The "Soldiers of the First World War"  database is EXTREMELY hard to find now. They have moved it, and the new link does not work! When searching for it, one is instead directed to obscure areas (e.g. regimental numbers ) instead of the main data base.  I have used it many times in the past and yet it took me about 10 tries to open the link tonight!  It is VERY FRUSTRATING. However, IF you can get into the data base to search, it is a real treasure trove. http://www.collectionscanada.ca/genealogy/022-909.006-e.html is the page the link is on, but the link did not respond most of the time.

Privacy rules basically say that unless someone has been dead for at least 20 years, the access to the records is restricted to the person or their immediate next of kin.

Commonwealth World War I and II Fatal Casualties

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records those who died, their rank, service number, their next of kin, date, unit, date of death and usually where they are buried. If there is no known resting place, then the location where they are commemorated is shown. Thus one can find out the graveyard and grave number in many cases.  Remember many people had similar names, so always try to match up other information to confirm the person is the correct one.
