Bringing a Ferret back to Canada

If bringing a Ferret back to Canada here are the US and Canadian and Provincial government's attitudes as described to me by a friend who imports many ex-military vehicles and militaria into Canada: "The US has no interest in the fact that it's an armoured vehicle because it is not of American manufacture. If it is registered as a road going vehicle it must be declared to US Customs outbound at least 72 hours before the vehicle arrives at the border for inspection. No drama with Canada Customs; only regarded as an overage vehicle but it would have to pass Provincial safety before being registered and licensed here."  Colin adds: Canada Customs would also collect tax on the sale amount. Yes, it is our understanding that this vehicle can be brought back to Canada without problem, is not subject to US SME restrictions as it is not US made, and that you have to notify Canadian Customs 3 days before it gets to the border (they hate surprises).

# 2 Ex-Canadian FERRET FOR SALE - in FLORIDA - August 2007

This Ferret is in the background. Looks like she was sandblasted and primer painted. It is in background of Ford GP jeep photo which he was selling on eBay in early August. A sharp-eyed Ferret owner spotted the Ferret in the background.
Left front fender. Remains of CANADA military licence plate. One tube is broken off smoke grenade launcher.
Hull data plate inside fighting compartment. 359.B.4.4 = Hull SN 359 Build date 4th month of 1954.

Ex-Canadian Ferret Mk. I  hull # 359.B.4.4  (Build date April 1954)

Just a plain Mk. I  (No turret. Early square side hatches for driver.  359th one made)

12/08/07, Seller is Karl Kahn <combinedoperations@comcast.net >  in Florida, USA

Vehicle came out of Alberta.

CANADA licence plate on left front with CFR numbers cut off. I sent him info on how to find CFR number stamped into hull. My best guess at this time is that it is 54-82588 because that is the CFR closest to 54-82560 which had the next hull SN ( 360.B.4.4) and which came out of Calgary.

Vehicle possibly very rough - One photo shows port smoke discharger with one tube broken off.

Running a couple of years ago?

He wanted $6,000 US I believe. Shipping to Canada could be expensive ... unless you can get a Quebec snowbird truck driver to bring it home next Spring! Might be able to dicker? May have come out of Southeastern Parts Equipment in Georgia. (SECO).

" I currently have a Canadian Ferret in stock ... It just arrived. It has recently been painted on the exterior so the only thing I have is
what is stamped into the hull at manufacture:

295.B.2.4   [= Hull # 295 Build date Feb 1954]

It has a Brit data plate added on but I think that was done by a collector. It is off a Mk1/2. ... The reg number does not belong to it. It is what is
on the British data plate (Mk1/2 / I don't know where the plate came from)."

"Notes:

The vehicle will require a variety of repairs and maintenance to bring it to an operational status.
At a minimum it will require:
- the fuel system needs connecting
- the electrical system needs repair/connecting
- the vehicle is missing the gas tank neck & cap, carb air horn, drivers seat, spare tire cap, horn
- some bins need sheetmetal repair on bottom
- basic maintenance including fluid/filter change

This Ferret was used by the Canadian military during its service life. The sale will include a set of British manuals for the vehicle. Since this vehicle will require work to become operational we are selling it at a very reduced price."
