The Canadian War Museum has a large collection of historic military vehicles.

These are very useful for people wanting to understand the lives of service personnel, for veterans to reminisce, for vehicle restorers to consult, for model makers, etc.

Here are some of their vehicles. Not all are on display as some are in storage and some have been lent to other museums. Unfortunately this part of their collection is not yet "on-line" so if you search their web site for "jeep" you will find photos and paintings, not actual jeeps.

Here is a web site with photos taken at the CWM's previous storage location "Vimy House"  http://dana-nield.com/vimy/

Panther Tank (WWII Germany)

TURRET

This tank was formerly at CFB Borden on outside display. Photos taken at CWM Nov 2006. It was one of the deadliest tanks in WWII.  Its history in not known. It is NOT one of the vehicles brought to Canada by Farley Mowat. There is another Panther apparently derelict at CFR Petawawa.

The Panther is in the CWM workshop and is under restoration. It is not yet on public display. Photos taken November 2006 by Colin Stevens. They expect to put it out on display in January 2008.

V-1 Piloted Buzz-Bomb (WWII Germany)

A very rare piloted German WWII V-1 developed in 1945. This one is believed to have been stolen from the factory under a mountain by Canadian officer Farley Mowat. The story is told in his book "My Father's Son."

This V1 was apparently found in Montreal and restored for the Canadian War Museum by the Royal Canadian Air Force in the 1960s. The CWM wanted a regular" V-1 so the cockpit was removed. The canopy is not back in place and the aircraft is awaiting restoration in the CWM work shop (November 2006). Photos by Colin Stevens.

Nose of the V-1. Wings have been removed.

One of Hitler's Staff Car s

Captured by American paratroopers in 1945. Displayed at EXPO 67 in Montreal and then it came to the Canadian War Museum. Mistakenly thought to have been Hermann Goering's vehicle, research showed it was actually Hitler's. Sorry the photos did not turn out better.

Canadian Ford F15A Cab 13 Canadian Military Pattern (CMP)

Restored with US tires as WWII Canadian tires are not available. Believed to be one of 7 CMPs donated by Brian Wood of Vancouver, BC

Note the interactive gear shift display in front of it - but the designer forgot that this truck and most of those made in Canada in WWII were right hand drive because our army worked so closely with the British Army. .

German WWII self propelled gun "Sturmgeschutz"

This vehicle was apparently shot up on the ranges after WWII.  The markings have been added by the CWM.

Sherman Tank

This is one that actually served overseas and was brought home to Ottawa by the regiment.

Some of the tanks

Left to Right: Churchill; German Jagdpanzer; German Panzer II; Canadian built Valentine tank; RCN gun turret.

The Valentine has been left unrestored as it was given to the Soviets to fight the Nazis. During a battle in Russia, it sank in a bog. Local villagers remembered its location and salvaged it after the war.
