The Battle of Culloden was the final defeat for the Jacobite (Scottish royal
supporters) cause in Scotland. Bonnie Prince Charlie's troops were
defeated by the English.
Today the battlefield is preserved and one can easily see how foolish the
commanders of the Scottish forces were. Their men were exhausted, wet and
hungry. They fought best when swooping down on their enemy by surprise. at
Culloden field favoured the British with their discipline, cannons and muskets.
Simply put, the Scots did not stand a chance. There is one original building on
the battlefield and markers. Some markers are old and show the mass burial sites
of the clans. I suspect the dead were so identified by their tartans.
There were a few MacGregors at this battle, but the majority of MacGregors,
who were fiercely loyal to the Jacobite cause, were off on another mission.
I visited this battlefield in April 2005.
