Canada is fighting the War on Terror in Afghanistan and we are suffering casualties.  Some are wounded and some are fatal. Here are two:

Master Corporal Paul FRANKLIN - He lost both legs in an attack in Afghanistan

Captain Colin Stevens, CD and MCpl Paul Franklin at the National Cenotaph, 2006-11-12

MCpl Franklin was seriously wounded when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) exploded on 2006-01-14 and destroyed the G-Wagon that he was riding in. Diplomat Glyn Berry (aged 59) was killed. Pte. William Edward Salikin (3PPCLI) 23 of Edmonton, AB and Cpl. Jeffrey Bailey (1CER) age 26 from Edmonton were was also seriously injured.  [Information from Esprit de Corps magazine Vol. 13 No. 9 (2006).] MCpl Franklin lost both of his legs as a result of this attack.

On November 11, 2006, MCpl. Franklin was at the National War Memorial walking around with canes on his artificial legs. I met him there the next day when we both returned to visit the site independently to "be there" without the huge crowd. We had a chance to talk briefly and I was amazed at this young man's bravery .

Goddard to be buried in Ottawa military cemetery

Last Updated: Wednesday, May 24, 2006 | 11:14 PM ET

Capt. Nichola Goddard, Canada's first female combat soldier to be killed on the front lines, will be buried at Canada's national military cemetery.

Goddard, 26, died May 17 while fighting Taliban insurgents outside Kandahar, where roughly 2,300 Canadian soldiers are deployed.

She will be buried at the National Military Cemetery, a national historic site established in 2001 at the urging of some who believed Canada needed an equivalent of the U.S. military burial grounds in Arlington, Va.

Some believe the decision to bury Goddard in the two-hectare military cemetery will draw attention to the little-known site.

Few soldiers killed in combat have been buried at the cemetery, military historian Jack Granatstein told Canadian Press. He says he'd like to see that changed.

I think this is where people who are killed in action, killed overseas, should be buried," Granatstein said.

Goddard's funeral will take place Friday in the same Calgary church where she married Jason Beam less than four years ago.

The Calgary native lived in Shilo, Man. She was the 16th Canadian soldier to be killed in Afghanistan and will be the only one not buried in their hometown.
