Military forces all over the world use abbreviations to speed things up,
reduce writing, and theoretically to reduce confusion.
Military personnel using these everyday soon get used to them but often they
are a complete mystery to researchers.
Here are scans of original Canadian manuals. These were in turn reprints of
the British manuals.
Abbreviations keep changing and so one wants to look for manuals of the
period.

(Canadian Army reprint of British manual approved 9 January 1943.)
This copy had Amendment No. 1 changes of 5 June 1943 entered by the
soldier. He missed some of the changes and I will note these in
future.
I compared it with another unmodified one and explanatory note are
shown below of the changes.

Table I - Regiments and Corps of the British Army
Original abbreviation for 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoons Guards was
"5 INNIS DG"
Pages 4 & 5
Page 5 - Original name version for QUEENS regiment was "Queen's Own
Royal Regiment". In Amdt 1, "Own" was deleted and (West
Surrey) added after the name.
Pages 6-7 with 1943 insert amdt (i.e. Amendment) 1 of June 1943.
Page 7 revealed after amendment insert has been folded over to
left.
Pages 8-9
Page 8 Amdt. 1 second from bottom. Amdt. 1 deleted Embarkation medical
officer - EMO".
Page 9 - Half way down the page Amdt. 1 deleted "Gliderborne troops
- glider tps"
Pages 10-11
Page 10 - Amdt. 1 Lorry command vehicle - LCV became Lorry command-
CV" (I suspect the soldier made a mistake when amending his manual)
Page 11 - Pounder abbreviation "pdr" became "pr".
Second in command changed from 2 IC to 1IC (i.e. no space after the 2).

SLP.
